World Clean Up Day- September 19th 2020!
Last year, World Cleanup Day united more than 20 million people in 180 countries. On that day volunteers and partners worldwide came together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets. World Clean up Day is not purely about cleaning up trash. The vision is a clean and healthy waste free planet. We tackle the environmental challenges related to the mismanaged solid waste crisis by mobilizing millions of positive-minded people into coordinated local and global actions.
This year’s World Clean Up Day is September 19th 2020:
9:00 AM- 12:00 PM Meet at Tamarack Centre
– Assignments given out, garbage drop off location
11:00 AM- 3:00 PM Idlewild Park Cranbrook
9:00 AM- 12:00 PM Meet at The Aquatic Centre
– Focus areas Flume and Save On Foods, up to Platzl
– Planting and Weed Removal
Columbia Outdoor School and JCI Kootenay have teamed up this year for World Clean Up Day, focusing on cleaning up Idlewild.
This is a family friendly event.
Here are the ways you and your organization can participate in World Cleanup Day on September 19th:
Cleanups will be organized where possible and allowed. Organizers may gather people for cleanups with a recommendation to restrict the number of participants and to spread cleanup locations out to avoid people coming in close contact with each other.
As an alternative to large gatherings, people can be invited to clean their surrounding areas with their families or individually without massive gatherings.
Drop into the Tamarack Mall (Cranbrook), Civic Centre (Kimberley) parking lot to meet our crew to find out where your support is needed on the day of the event. Garbage drop off also available at these locations.
Registration is now open! Please email Shonna Murphy at Shonna@ColumbiaOutdoorSchool.com to register your business, family, neighborhood, or community group.

If you would like some help to advertise your event, please let us know and we’ll be happy to get some marketing material out to you! Use the hashtag: #WorldCleanUpDay2020Cranbrook #WorldCleanUpDay2020Kimberley and post pictures of your crew cleaning up the community.
Please supply your group with gloves, garbage bags and a litter disposal station. If you need some help to supply your group with these materials, please let us know or stop by our drop-in locations to pick some up and drop off and garbage.
Idlewild Planting Project
Columbia Outdoor School will be providing free workshops for children and community members on Invasive Species identification and removal, planting the riparian zone around the reservoir, and removing garbage from the park. To minimize the sharing of tools between groups, we ask that you please bring your own gardening equipment if you have some, such as shovels, gardening gloves, and shears. If you’d like to help with the removal of the weeds in the wetland, please bring your weed whacker!
