Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world and one of the best known functions of a wetland is to provide habitat for birds.  Birds not only use wetlands for shelter, drinking water and food but also for breeding, nesting, and rearing young.  Some species of migratory birds are so dependent on certain wetlands that they would become extinct if those wetlands were destroyed.

Many factors shape the relation between wetlands and birds such as the depth and quality of the water, as well as the availability of food and shelter.

Over a hundred species of birds have been spotted at Idlewild Park.  Some of these include Mountain Bluebird, Common Nighthawk, Canada Goose, Sandpiper, Cedar Waxwing and Red Crossbill.
